Straightforward enough. But the real cost picture gets messier when you factor in AI add-ons, per-seat scaling, and the features that quietly disappear on lower tiers.
Free Plan: Genuinely Useful, But With a Catch
Notion’s free tier is generous for one person. You get databases, kanban boards, calendars, basic AI features, and a surprisingly capable workspace. No time limit. No trial expiration.
The catch? Add a second team member and you hit a block limit. Notion won’t tell you exactly what that limit is — they just say “limited.” Once you run out, you can’t add new blocks. Existing content stays accessible, but your workspace is effectively frozen until you pay.
For solo users, though? The free plan is hard to beat. Students get an even better deal: Plus features for free with a .edu email address.
Plus Plan ($10-12/user/mo): Where Most Teams Start
Plus removes the block limit and adds features that actually matter for collaboration:

This is where Notion gets interesting — and expensive.
Business includes everything from Plus, and adds the AI features that Notion has been building their entire 2025-2026 product strategy around:
- Notion Agent — AI that can automate multi-step workflows across your workspace
- AI Meeting Notes — auto-transcription and summaries
- Enterprise Search (Beta) — search across Slack, Google Drive, and other connected apps
- SAML SSO
- Row-level database permissions
- Private teamspaces
- Premium integrations (GitHub, Jira, Asana)
The jump from Plus to Business is steep: $8/user/month more. For a 10-person team, that’s an extra $960/year just for the tier upgrade.

Enterprise pricing isn’t public. Based on vendor negotiation data, expect:

You get zero data retention with AI providers, SCIM provisioning, audit logs, and a dedicated Customer Success Manager. Most teams under 50 people won’t need any of this.
The AI Add-On Trap
This is where Notion’s pricing gets sneaky.
Business and Enterprise plans include Notion AI (Agent, Meeting Notes, Enterprise Search) at no extra cost. But if you’re on the Plus plan and want AI features? You’ll pay $10/user/month as a separate add-on.
Do the math: Plus ($10) + AI add-on ($10) = $20/user/month. That’s the same price as Business monthly billing — but with fewer features. Notion effectively forces Plus users into upgrading to Business if they want AI.
Then there’s Custom Agents (currently in beta, free until May 4, 2026). After that, credits cost $10 per 1,000. Simple automations use 30-60 runs per 1,000 credits. Complex workflows burn through credits much faster. This could add $10-50/month depending on usage — a cost that’s hard to predict upfront.

At 50 users on Business, you’re spending $10,800/year. That’s real money. At that scale, it’s worth getting Enterprise quotes — you might save 20-30% with a multi-year commitment.
Hidden Costs and Gotchas
Mid-cycle seat additions
Add someone mid-billing cycle? You’re charged a prorated amount immediately. Remove someone? The seat stays available for reassignment, but you don’t get a credit. Timing matters.
Custom domains for Notion Sites
Want to publish a Notion page on your own domain? That’s an extra $10/month per domain. Multiple sites mean multiple fees.
Payment failures
Notion retries failed payments up to 8 times over one month. If all fail, your workspace gets restricted and eventually downgraded to Free. Keep your card updated.
Refund windows
Monthly plans: 3-day refund window. Annual plans: 30 days. Miss these windows and you’re locked in. EU/UK users get 14 days regardless.
Who Should Pick What
Solo users: Stick with Free. It’s legitimately good.
Small teams (2-10): Plus annual billing. Skip AI unless you’ll actually use it daily.
